Dog Nuisance and Break In...

Officer Emily Smith offered a program about neighborhood safety in View Place when the Brown-Allen home was broken into a few years ago.

She talked about dog nuisance complaints.  Mainly dogs being chained up outside, fenced in, or left indoors all day while the owners were at work.  Naturally, dogs bark for many reason, but mainly they are seeking attention when they are bored and lonely.  Since the barking is a nuisance and disturbance, it can be reported and an owner can be fined.  However, we want to avoid this unless the owner is not cooperating or listening to your concerns.

Office Smith suggested to dog owners to find a humane way to keep their dogs from becoming stressed out while owners are at work.   For example, leave fresh water in their bowls, fresh food, toys, and make sure they are given them plenty of exercise and loving care when you return.  Make sure your dog is on a leash when walking them throughout the neighborhood otherwise you will be fined.   Just by exercising your dog, it  will cut down on the nuisance barking when they are lonely for their owner. 

Another thing Officer Smith suggested was informing the township police about vacations or extended leave from your  home. Always provide an emergency contact number to a neighbor and police for back up.  Notifying your neighbors or asking one to look after the house for suspicious activity was another suggestion.    All residents should call 911 in the event they see any suspicious activity or people in our neighborhood.  For example, if you see moving trucks or people you can't recognize  removing items from a home, contact the officers anyway.  They  would rather be wrong 100 times checking something out rather than finding a home was being broken into.

Remember, we are a neighborhood here in View Place. Get to know your neighbors. If something is going on like nuisance barking,  small children playing without adult  supervision, or gutters falling down, it's okay to drop over and say, "I'm concerned about....."   If they don't respond or take it personal, use the Quick Links complaint form online.    

Let's all try to first give our neighbors the benefit. Most are very considerate and try to look for solutions if there are issues like break-ins, fulling down gutters,  and barking dogs.  So try and  work together to resolve issues.  If your dog is barking, be considerate. Don't yell or be nasty to neighbors who are only trying to bring something to your attention.  Many neighbors are dealing with serious medical  treatments and some are working all  night at a hospital.  It's inconsiderate and disrespectful for neighbors to go away and not care about their own dog's nuisance barking.

Another thing to remember, if somebody breaks into your home, please contact the Springfield Township 911 immediately. If you find out your neighbor's home was broken into, please offer some form of sympathy and support. Report suspicious activity in our neighborhood by calling 911 for emergencies or 522 1412 for non emergencies.  Also use the quicklinks page to report when a home is falling into disrepair if the neighbor ignores a request to take pride in their property and community.

Annual Fire Department Open House, October 10th

In observance of National Fire Prevention Week, the Springfield Township Fire Department will open its doors to the public for an exciting open house event Saturday, October 10, 2015 from noon to 4:00 p.m. Families are invited to participate in fire prevention & awareness activities at the main station located at 9150 Winton Road.

The event's main purpose is to educate families on fire safety. The Open House will feature educational booths, fire station tours, live burn demonstrations, a helicopter landing and many hands-on activities. Kids will learn more about creating a fire escape plan with reenactments in the Fire Safe House and they can also meet many of the firefighters and EMS professionals that work to keep residents safe in Springfield Township.

Residential and Church Lights

Hello Neighbors, 

Just read a letter generated by Chris Gilbert that the Township is generating the case file to require the photogrammic study. A photogrammic study will document the impact of the Church lights on the neighborhood -- amount of light that floods into homes and obstructs viewing at night. 

Mr. Gilbert has also informed the neighbors in View Place directly impacted by the light pollution  that he is meeting with the Law Director to get an opinion on specific requirements.  Once the church is in receipt of the letter, a timeframe for the study will be ready and they can move forward. 

It is a good thing to have the language of the resolution about residential lighting on the side of the neighbors in View Place. It is also a very good thing to have the advocacy and support of neighbors and Finneytown Civic Association all whom are willing to use their personal time to look into zoning regulations and restrictions.

Since Monday, the lights have been off so somebody is answering our prayers.

The premise is simple: an alert goes out via Twitter, Facebook, email, etc. that directs like-minded shoppers to a particular retail store or restaurant. This is not only an opportunity to support a local business but also a chance to meet new neighbors and see old friends. Brentwood Spirits and Wine will be our cash mob target on Saturday, February 9th, from 1 pm – 5 pm. Brentwood Spirits and Wine fits the profile because they are locally owned and independently operated. We are asking everyone to stop by Brentwood Spirits and Wine on Saturday, February 9th and spend $15-20 (or more if you wish). DEB SEMINICK TAKES OVER FEB. 1 AS SUPERINTENDENT

The Finneytown Local School District Board of Education named Ms. Deb Semenick as interim superintendent. Semenick takes over February 1, 2013 when current superintendent, Dr. Alan Robertson, retires. The vote was unanimous.  ”She has an in-depth knowledge of the community, curriculum and instruction, and also knows what it takes to continue the great tradition,” said Mrs. Horn. Ms. Semenick is no stranger to the Finneytown traditions, having been a principal at Whitaker Elementary from 1997-2008. She is currently Director of Student Services for the Finneytown district. Semenick, who is licensed as a superintendent, principal, and teacher, has served as a principal and teacher of both regular and special needs students in five different school districts. She has received numerous awards and accolades as an effective leader, including the Council for Exceptional Children Principal Award, a nomination for the Leadership Award from the Inclusion Network, and Finneytown Educator of the Year. She has participated in the High Aims Math and Science Academy for Principals, and is a certified trainer for Ruby Payne’s Framework for Understanding Poverty. At Whitaker she spearheaded a school improvement project
to expand the academic achievements of all students based on Effective Schools research and the 8-Step
Instructional Model. One parent commented about Ms. Semenick’s “astute ability” to support change with grace. She “has been an excellent role model of change for her peers, staff, and Whitaker students and families.”

AUDITOR WARNS ABOUT PROPERTY VALUATION APPEALS
Hamilton County Auditor Dusty Rhodes is warning property owners to beware of companies offering to assist with valuation appeals. ValueAppeal, LLC of Seattle is one of several companies mailing letters to area residents saying they could be overpaying their taxes because the County value of their property might be in error, Rhodes said. “The information is available and free,” Rhodes said. The letters come on the heels of the 2011 reevaluation of all Hamilton County properties. Overall, property lost $5 billion in value. The current values became effective on the first tax bill in 2012. “We advise homeowners to contact a realtor who is active in their area for an independent opinion of their value as a first step,” he said. Owners can also review
recent sales of comparable properties on the auditor’s Web site www.hcauditor.org. Rhodes added nobody
can offer a “guarantee” or “a very high likelihood” of a value reduction. Owners who believe their value is inaccurate should submit their Board of Revision complaint forms to the auditor’s office by 4 p.m. on March
31. Complaint forms and instructions are available from the Auditor’s office or may be accessed on the
Auditor’s Web site.


VIEW PLACE NEIGHBORS FIGHTING GRACE POINT CHURCH LIGHTS

I really hate to give up a chance to talk out problems, but it appears that is the case concerning bright
lights from a church that disturbs neighbors. And, I mean, REALLY bright lights! View Place neighborhood has always been known as a star-gazer’s delight, with dark skies perfect to see stars and the night sky heavens. The Township is now undertaking a study to determine if the stadium-like lights installed at Grace Point Church that borders Keats and View Place are in fact against the law. The pastor has revealed that he is not going to cooperate with the neighbors by either replacing the bright lights with a softer light, or, by turning the lights off after 10 p.m. Now, we are at the mercy of Springfield Township.


Duke Energy Appliance Recycling
Duke Energy Ohio and Kentucky has launched a new program designed to give customers the ability to
recycle outdated refrigerators and freezers in a convenient way (and earn some money too)! The Appliance
Recycling Program (ARP) was launched in October, specifically targeting older refrigerators and freezers
that customers often keep in garages or basements to aid in food and beverage storage. Older appliances that are not as energy efficient as newer models can cost an additional $150 per year to operate. To have your refrigerator or freezer picked up, appliances must be in working condition and between 10 and 30 cubic feet in size. An incentive check for $30 will arrive within 4-6 weeks. Some of the highlights from the meeting were as follows:

1) A guest speaker representing a company providing an energy-use inspection of your home for $50 and then coordinates a follow up to make necessary changes at a very low cost.

2) Concern from neighbors living near Brent Park who would like to reclaim this park for their neighborhood.   Vandalism, loitering, and misuse of the property has been a challenge for the neighbors  over there.  Many of the families have kids attending the school and don't see kids from Finneytown as the problem.   The problem  is from kids who are showing up who are not using the park for it's intended purpose of outdoor recreation use.

3) School superintendent was present giving a report about improvements being made in the buildings.  The district was eligible for funds that will help cut costs on energy use by becoming more energy efficient.

As soon as I get the official notes, this will have to do!

Background:



Jeff Dean presented the issues and the proposal before the membership to have the VPCA join with the FCA. The View Place Civic Association has been struggling over the past few years with keeping a sufficient number of board members, with keeping up with having regular board meetings, approving expenditures (board approval needed) and with the business end of running a civic association in general. Donna Saul has handed in her resignation as President effective today. By contrast, the FCA has a robust set of operating rules, steady board participation, and a larger membership.



At the same time, Donna Saul has been maintaining a very effective and popular blog site for View Place residents to air concerns, share positive stories, and stay in communication. Donna has also been ensuring that the flower boxes are maintained, the Easter Egg hunt is conducted, and that View Place area residents have the 4th of July parade with the ST Police and Fire Department. The View Place neighborhood remains a vital and connected community.



Jeff Dean has continued to work on land use issues such as preventing the cell tower lights from becoming a nuisance, ensuring that clear-cutting and land filling activities comply with environmental regulations, and participating in the Township land use planning committees. He has also recently joined the FCA and has begun to share his interest in these types of issues with them, and vice versa.



The Proposal before the membership:



Given the above, it was proposed by the VPCA board that the VPCA dissolve as an official civic association by joining with FCA. The funds in the VPCA treasury (approximately $998) would be transferred to the FCA, but all of the funds would be earmarked for VPCA activities only, such as the flower boxes and Easter egg hunt. The FCA would assist View Place residents with civic issues with the strength of organization and a larger membership. When the VPCA funds run out, FCA funds could be used for View Place residents, but would need to be prioritized along with all other FCA needs. The View Place area would retain a strong identity as a separate neighborhood with its unique needs. It was acknowledged that there was still some work to be done to finalize the details, but that a vote in favor of the proposal would essentially move the proposal forward and move the funds.



Of the members in attendance (see attached sign-in), the vote was in favor of the proposal with 23 yeah and 1 abstention.

Neighborhood Meeting

It was a pretty decent turnout for our neighborhood meeting at Gracepoint Church. In attendance from Finneytown Civic Association was Jim Golan and Dick Meyer letting us know that we were in good hands. Jeff Dean presided and gave his treasurer's report. He will write the final check from the View Place bank account as soon as he gets the last statement.  A big thanks goes out to Jeff for keeping tabs on the banks and the fees they were charging our neighborhood account. Not only did Jeff get them to waive the fees, he asked them for more time.  He saved us considerable money that would have been swallowed up in fees by asking the bank for more time to settle our accounts.



Like many other banks, Key Bank was charging monthly fees because our account was considered inactive even though we deposited membership which flowed  infrequently.  The only checks he wrote were for reimbursement for the flowers and neighborhood activities.

Jeff reported we  had $1,013.00 in the account since August, and rather than losing $60 plus  in annual fees, we thought it was good idea to merge into the Finneytown Civic Association where they have free checking. We will continue to keep our View Place designation as a neighborhood like they do with Hollyhock Farms. We'll also continue the traditions of the parade, egg hunt, directory, and weblog. I'll try to keep everyone connected through the email and copy everything to Jim Golan.

In the meantime, visit the Finneytown Civic Association webpage and send in your membership. They do a lot of work in the community and will represent our concerns even better then when we had VPCA. I did mention the issues and concerns that were currently on the slate:

1) Concerns we had about being blocked in from St. X traffic and the high volume of traffic accidents

2) Current petition for sewers

One thing we're hearing is "rumors" about the church building a recreation center or gym on their property. Our relationship with the church has been very good so we know that the neighbors impacted by any plans will be involved in the planning stage.

View Place Neighborhood Meeting

It was a pretty decent turnout for our neighborhood meeting at Gracepoint Church.  In attendance from Finneytown Civic Association was Jim Golan and Dick Meyer letting us know that we were in good hands.  Jeff Dean presided and gave his treasurer's report.  He will write the final check from the View Place bank account as soon as he gets the last statement. 

Like many other banks, Key Bank was charging monthly fees because our account was consired inactive because  although we deposited the membership dues which flowed in infrequently, we only write a one or two checks a year to reimburse for the flowers and neighborhood activities.

Jeff has spent the last year calling up the bank each month asking them to waive the fee.  A big thank you goes out to Jeff Dean for being such a good steward of our neighbhorhood money. He saved us considerable money that would have been swallowed up in fees by asking the bank for more time to settle our accounts.

Finneytown Civic Association now has a Green CommitteeContributed

The goal of the FCA Green Committee is to involve Finneytown residents in projects that improve our local environment. A list of possible projects includes community clean up days, rain barrel installations, rain garden development, recycling projects, and creation of a Finneytown community garden. "Plans are already in the works to team up with the Finneytown High School Go Green Club," said David Gaines, "and we are hoping to coordinate events with a variety of organizations such as scouting troops, church groups and garden clubs.

All are welcome." "There are a bunch of cool resources in the green community that we can tap into," said Joe Gorman. For instance, Cincinnati State has a coordinator of green resources who can share practical information on geo-thermal cooling and heating systems, and, solar energy ideas.
